Assessing Brain Activities during Testing: An Exploratory Study with EEG and Music

The practice of listening to music during daily activities, particularly among software development professionals, has gained popularity in professional and collaborative environments. Computing professionals often adopt this habit to enhance concentration and mitigate external noise. This study aims to investigate the influence of music on the cognitive processes of professional software testers, with a specific focus on its impact on performance.

The research employs a controlled experiment involving professional software testers to assess how music affects their cognitive functions. The methodology also includes a comprehensive literature review on the application of EEG in contexts beyond software engineering and an analysis of tools and equipment for measuring participants' brain activity. This study is expected to contribute to the field by elucidating the relationship between music and software testing performance, offering insights from neurological analyses of developers, and potentially identifying gender-related differences in test script reviews under the influence of music. By exploring how music affects the cognitive functions of software professionals engaged in testing activities, this research aims to deepen our understanding of its role in enhancing professional performance. The findings are anticipated to provide valuable insights for future research in this domain.
